Today, a very moden interpretation of an ancient text - Ecce Concipies, by English composer Matthew Martin (1976 - ). It is a setting of words of the angel Gabriel in Luke's gospel, when he appears to the Virgin Mary.
Matthew is at present the Director of Music at Keble College, Oxford, and continues to compose. He has been appointed Precentor of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge (Fr Philip's college) and will take up his post in April 2020.
The text:
From Luke 1 - words spoken by the Angel Gabriel to Mary at the Annunciation:
And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
The Music:
Listen out for the constant ecce concipies refrain in the background - it's rather urgent and insistent.
This performance is by the Choir of Merton College, Oxford.
