Michael Portillo visit

It was wonderful to welcome Michael Portillo and his film crew to St Michael’s this morning. They are making a programme for the BBC about local composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912).

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was brought up in Croydon and went on, aged 15, to study at the Royal College of Music, where his tutors included Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. Among his most famous compositions is Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast, premiered at the RCM in November 1898 conducted by Stanford.
